Goldcheek
This is one of four cheek altered mutations. If it is indeed a
real mutation and not a mix of SLYC and PF. Very little is
known about this mutation and few breeders are working
with it. The cheeks resemble a cross between the DYC,
SLYC, and PF. A true golden color. Mature cocks will be
slightly darker due to the underlying yellow psittacin of
the face. Some think it is similar to PF in that they share
dominancy, while others have found it not to be true. It is
recessive so both parents have to be either visual or split.
Breeding this mutation can be difficult and the best results
are achieved artifically incubating the eggs and raising the
chicks from day one, or fostering the eggs. Survival rate for
these chicks is very low. I suspect weak genetic makeup to
be the main cause. Goldcheek hens have the tendency to be
poor sitters, mothers, and exhibit cock~like behaviors.
Similar to the SLYC hens, resulting in abandoned nests
and, if chicks do hatch, babies.
I would recommend not mixing this mutation with the
other 3 cheek patch mutations. I would personally add WF
to this list also. Other mutations would be acceptable to
use.
